The city of Thorold (pop. 18,244) is nestled in the middle of the Niagara Region atop of the breath-taking escarpment adjacent to the three major municipalities of St. Catharines, Niagara Falls and Welland.  It is a unique and diverse community that has a rich history. It also attracts thousands of tourists annually. Many early settlers, including George Keefer, a Thorold resident and president of the Welland Canal Company, played an integral role in the construction of the Welland Canal throughout the 19th and early part of the 20th century. Today, Thorold is known as Canada's "Canal City" and is one of few authentic canal downtown areas remaining in North America. During the shipping season that runs from late March to December, you can watch the remarkable passage of ocean and lake-bound vessels through the famous Twin Flight Locks from the bird's eye panorama platform at the Lock 7 Information Centre, or watch a lift bridge operation in Allanburg. The Thorold area is rich in heritage and history and attracts thousands of tourists annually.

Thorold’s appeal is not only limited to its thriving business infrastructure; it is also an exceptional place to live. The Welland Canal, leisure trails, distinct neighbourhoods and recreation facilities can be found around every corner. The city offers quality amenities: libraries, churches, medical services and shopping. Thorold initiated and has retained for three years its title of “Canada’s Most Patriotic City”.
