Thorold – A canal city with big city connections and opportunities!

Choose Niagara and you'll be part of the evolution of a region in action. The transformation of the area's economy and the mapping of Niagara's future are driving the development of the Region's Growth Management Strategy. It is anticipated that long term growth will be directed in southern municipalities along Niagara Falls/Fort Erie and Thorold/Welland/Port Colborne corridors. This prediction is known as the Grow South vision.

While the northern tier of Niagara is restricted by the provincial Greenbelt legislation, Thorold is largely unencumbered and ripe for future development. There are a number of developments underway across the community.

Thorold's central location within the Region makes it a great prospect for expanding and growing businesses. Its untapped potential and room for commercial and industrial growth mean the city is poised to attract a range of companies in the future.

As the area grows, sustainable and well-planned development is a local priority. The city's Strategic Plan 2008 - 2011 has stated the need to ensure protection of green spaces and parkland, and that new development does not negatively impact the community. The City is confident servicing needs can be accommodated and that areas of huge economic potential can be serviced. New potential within the green sector and other emerging industries is blooming, while the City resolves not to lose touch with its traditionally significant manufacturing base.

Thorold has cemented and continues to build its reputation as a prime location for downtown and Brownfield redevelopment. The City's Community Improvement Plan offers incentives such as development charge exemptions, tax assistance and grants to projects that meet the criteria of the program.

The city will play a role within the Niagara Gateway plan, which recognizes Niagara Falls and Fort Erie border crossings as entry points for increased trade and movement of goods and tourism. The Gateway Economic Centre in southern Niagara will capitalize on port facilities, including Thorold's canal ports. The city is poised to welcome business that will expand or relocate thanks to the Gateway concept.
