Niagara’s Logistics

Niagara’s fully serviced industrial lands are all located close to major transportation routes and international bridge crossings. Niagara’s border crossings are less congested than other major Ontario crossings enabling easy access to U.S. Markets and more dependable Just-In-Time deliveries. The Niagara border is the second busiest commercial crossing between the U.S. and Canada, carrying 19% of all trade between the two countries.

Trucking Costs Per Ton Per Mile

Niagara has over 100 companies involved in warehousing, logistics, brokerage and transportation services. Trucking costs per ton per mile vary based on distance (short versus long haul) and demand. For example, shipping goods from Niagara to Cincinnati may cost C$ 2.40 per mile (C$ 0.109 per short ton mile) whereas shipping goods from Cincinnati to Niagara may cost C$ 1.20 per mile (C$ 0.055 per short ton mile).

Rail Costs Per Ton Per Mile

The existing rail terminal facilities available to companies in Niagara are an asset to local companies wishing to ship long distances. Canadian National (CN), Canadian Pacific Railways (CPR) and Port Colborne Harbour Railways (PCHR) all operate within Niagara. Several local rail operators offer logistics services. Additionally, a number of properties with existing rail spurs are currently for sale and other sites have the potential for rail spur extensions. Several suitable transloading facilities are available in Niagara. In addition an intermodal facility is located within close proximity to Niagara.

Airport Transportation

Three commercial and cargo airports with regularly scheduled flights are within 30 minutes to 1.5 hours of Niagara. These airports include Hamilton International Airport, Buffalo-Niagara International Airport and Lester B. Person International Airport (Toronto). Additionally, the Niagara District Airport and the Niagara Central Airport provide local general aviation services.  Several companies fly parts in directly to these local airports.

Welland Canal/Port of Hamilton/ St. Lawrence Seaway

Niagara is strategically located on the Welland Canal which is part of the St.Lawrence Seaway System. The Welland Canal provides direct international shipping access from Niagara. Docking facilities are located at Port Colborne, Port Robinson, Thorold and Welland along the canal. There are four companies that provide docking and loading services at several locations along the Welland Canal:

The Port of Hamilton handles the largest volume of cargo and shipping traffic of all the Canadian Great Lakes ports, ranking it among the top ten ports in Canada.
