Program for Export Market Development (PEMD)

International Trade Canada has closed down the Program for Export Market Development for Industry (PEMD-Industry). PEMD-Industry contributions that were approved before March 30, 2004, will be honoured. For assistance with your international business development projects, please contact an Industry Canada regional office.

Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA)

The Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) is the principal Canadian development assistance agency. Through partnerships with international or Canadian development assistance organizations and Canadian firms, CIDA carries out projects supporting the efforts of developing countries. Canadian assistance usually takes the form of transfers of goods, services or skills to developing countries.

Of interest to exporters of goods and services, CIDA's Industrial Cooperation Program (INC) works in cooperation with the Canadian private sector. All projects supported by INC should focus on at least one of the six priorities of Canada's Official Development Assistance program:

basic human needs human rights, democracy and good governance
integration of women in development private sector development
infrastructure services environment

All projects must, however, include integration of women in development and the environment in their activities.

Canadian firms that have already made contacts for a project involving a partner in a developing country, and that have access to a source of funding, can use INC mechanisms to facilitate the implementation of their projects.

Eligibility for the program is limited to Canadian firms.

The assistance provided by INC in support of Canadian private-sector initiatives is provided under two sections, the Investment section and the Professional Services section.

Shared cost arrangements with Canadian private-sector firms has been a cornerstone of the Industrial Cooperation Program since its inception. Private firms that receive CIDA funding must assume the leadership of the business partnership project they wish to implement and operate as an autonomous agent in the developing country.
