Niagara’s transition from a manufacturing to a knowledge-based economy is providing the region with unique challenges and opportunities.
 
Following a national trend, small businesses are becoming more integral to the region’s economy. As of 2010, 49 percent of businesses in Niagara were owner-operated businesses (no employees or contract-only staff), 50 percent were Small and Medium Sized Enterprises (SMEs), and less than one percent of all businesses in Niagara employ over 200 people. Niagara’s Emerging Clusters – Bio-Products; Digital Media; Health & Wellness and Green Energy – are bolstered by a number of cutting-edge, local companies that are playing a role in the Region’s transformation to a knowledge-based economy.
