Nature and Conservation

The Niagara Region is defined by its geography. The Niagara Escarpment, a United Nations World Biosphere, runs through the middle of the region, providing outstanding vistas, trails and waterfalls. The many harbours and beaches along lakes Ontario and Erie provide great recreational pursuits, from boating to parks to trails. Niagara is a key location for bird migration – a birder's delight. The rich natural environment makes the region an attractive destination for anyone who loves outdoor activities. The region boasts more than 400 city parks, more than 2000 acres of natural areas at 44 locations and thousands of kilometers of trails, offering many opportunities for people of all ages to get outdoors and explore nature.

Some specific locations are:

The Bruce Trail

Canada's oldest and longest footpath provides the only continuous public access to the magnificent Niagara Escarpment, a UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve. It is one of only fifteen such reserves in all of Canada.

Short Hills Provincial Park

Popular with those active in such activities as hiking, horseback riding, fishing and mountain biking. The park contains six-side trails including the Bruce Trail and two waterfalls, it offers a mix of both dense forests and open meadows, with meandering creeks and gentle hills. Short Hills is an unimproved area - nature at its most natural!

Ball's Falls Heritage Conservation Area

Set within the breathtaking Twenty Valley watershed, Ball’s Falls Conservation Area offers spectacular scenery and natural beauty. Ball's Falls is a place where generations of people will be able to discover and learn about this area’s rich historical past. Visitors will take pleasure in the interactive exhibits and displays focusing on nature, conservation and culture in the context of the area’s history, the Niagara Escarpment and the watershed.

Niagara Falls

While the city and its myriad of attractions have grown up around them, the Falls themselves are the indisputable draw of this corner of the world. Tuck the extras away for a bit on your Niagara Falls vacation and lose yourself in the extraordinary spectacle that is the roaring, tumbling, magnificent Falls.

Marvel from the sidelines and then delve into the 13-storey fray with a boat tour of the foot of the waterworks. The Maid of the Mist is a staple whose passengers, decked out in recognizable blue ponchos, make for an iconic vista in these parts. Or check out behind the scenes on a Journey Behind the Falls tour. Observation decks lurk on the backside of the water curtain to offer unparalleled views.
