The arts are an integral part of Niagara's social fabric, creating jobs, diversifying local economies and strengthening community spirit and pride. Arts and cultural events often involve unique partnerships and sponsorships that bring together businesses, governments, artists, performers, crafts people and the public.
Amateur and professional companies present plays, dances, and other artistic works at complexes such as the Sullivan Mahoney Courthouse Theare in St. Catharines, which is used by the Carousel Players, Essential Collective Theatre, Lyndesfarne Theatre Projects, neXt Company Theatre, Niagara Dance Company, Suitcase in Point Theatre, Stray Theatre and Theatre Beyond Words.
The Niagara Symphony Orchestra and Chorus Niagara offer a variety of concerts on a seasonal basis. A number of galleries, including Rodman Hall and the Grimsby Art Gallery, also bring numerous shows to the area on a regular basis.
St. Catharines will welcome a new performing arts centre in 2014. The $94 million St. Catharines Performing Arts Centre will sit on a 4.5-acre site that stretches from St. Paul Street into an urban valley. The centre will include concert, dance, film and rehearsal halls, as well as the new home of Brock University's Marilyn I. Walker School of Fine and Performing Arts.
